The Rothay Manor Hotel & Restaurant sits in attractive landscaped gardens just a 15 minutes walk from the head of Windermere and 10 minutes from the centre of Ambleside. Rothay Manor is a place to relax, the atmosphere is friendly and informal whilst offering great service.

Owned and managed by Jamie & Jenna Shail, Rothay Manor has been listed in the Good Hotel Guide since the first edition and has held their prestigious Cesar Award continuously since 1992, in recognition of the maintenance of exceptional standards. It was also awarded a Condé Nast Johansens Award for Excellence 2021 for being the best dog friendly hotel in the UK & Ireland.



The hotel was originally built in 1823 as a private residence for a prosperous Liverpool merchant. The front of the building is grade II listed and the hotel still retains many features from the original Regency design.

There are 23 spacious individually designed and decorated bedrooms ranging from “classic” rooms to luxurious Pavilion Suites, with private courtyard gardens. There are 8 dog-friendly rooms, one of which is fully DDA compliant for those with accessibility requirements.



The 3 AA rosette awarded restaurant offers decadent dining from the a la carte or tasting menus.  For a more casual dining experience our Brathay room offers simpler fayre and is also dog friendly!

Dogs Welcome
Here at Rothay Manor we understand how important your dog is to you, and welcome well-behaved canines to share in your Lakes District Holiday. We know there is nothing more enjoyable than a Lakeland walk with your four-legged friend, or a swim in many of the lakes and tarns.

You are welcome to exercise your dog (on a lead) in our beautiful gardens and doggie waste bins are provided for your convenience.

The price for your dogs to join you on your wonderful break in the Lakes is just £25 per dog per stay, and we do limit this to 2 dogs only per room.
