Based in Portinscale near Keswick, The Mount is the perfect place from which to enjoy the outstanding natural scenery of the North Lakes all year round. The Mount is a home full of soul and Edwardian charm. Built during the Arts and Crafts period, for which Portinscale was a well-known centre, we instantly fell inlove with The Mount’s relaxed, arty feel.
There are many delightful period features in the house, such as the warm and cosy fireplace in the guest lounge. It is a loved, historic home with modern luxuries such as hotel-standard showers in the superior room ensuites.
The Mount’s unique style provides a good home for our eclectic collection of art that has been gathered from the different places we have lived around the world, from Brighton and London to Fiji and Kenya.
Our two Burmese cats also love living here and, although they are kept out of the guest rooms, we request that guests who suffer from allergies be aware that there are friendly cats walking around the premises.
For summer, Easter and Christmas / New Year weeks we offer all of The Mount as a whole house on a self-catering basis. With the capacity to sleep 11 in six bedrooms, it is the perfect place for a large family or a group of friends to stay in a beautiful Lakeland village next to Keswick.
You will have the exclusive use of the lounge, dining room and kitchen (with its Aga and conventional ovens). The house also has one cot and one high-chair.
Contact us to find out about any special offers or discounts on self-catering accommodation.

When you don’t fancy cooking – there is an array of restaurants and pubs in the nearby Keswick, a fabulous gastro pub 10 minutes away The Pheasant Inn – and in the village there is an excellent café The Chalet and a good local pub, the Farmer’s Arms.
Up to 3 dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.
Staying in Portinscale, Keswick
Portinscale is a delightful place for a Lake District holiday. The village is very close to Derwentwater (great for gentle lakeside walks and boating) and a short walk to Keswick, the centre of the beautiful Northern part of the Lake District. So it is easy to reach all the shops, cafes and theatre of Keswick, easy to get onto some good Lake District walks – while enjoying the peace and charm of a Lakeland village – with some great cafes and pub minutes away.
Wherever you look there are great views, Portinscale is a lovely spot for enjoying all the Lakes have to offer – walks, views, cycling, canoeing, cream-teas and good ales.
“We had our first holiday with a dog at the Mount last month and we were a bit nervous of taking her. Fortunately there really was no need as Caroline and Clive at the Mount were really welcoming, there is a lovely safe garden where you can relax outside and admire the beautiful plants and birds, and they are full of great local information to help us find good spots to visit. Beautiful place. We and our pup will be back!”
“We humans and our 2 labradors stayed at The Mount a few weeks ago and had a fabulous time. The Mount is a canine friendly gem. A beautiful and unique B&B that also welcomes dogs...hurray! Our room was lovely with a stunning view of Derwent Water. There were delicious treats for the dogs and some delicious teas to choose from for the non-dogs. We were all happy! Caroline and Clive, the B&B owners, were warm, welcoming and lovely people full of useful tips and ideas for dog friendly walks and visits to country pubs. The Mount is a beautiful place to stay. It felt like a real treat returning back to the B&B after a day’s walking. There are beautiful and interesting things to look at everywhere....a visual treat. This includes the fabulous garden. Weather dependent, ask to have your breakfast outside and take in the views. Talking of breakfast, Clive cooks a seriously mean breakfast to fire up any eager walker! I can’t recommend The Mount enough. It’s so nice to stay somewhere where you don’t feel awkward about having your dogs with you.”
