Orton nestles beneath an impressive limestone scar above the Upper Lune Valley with fantastic views across to the Howgills – those beautiful wild hills on your right as your head north up the M6. Now just inside the Dales National Park (from August 2016), Orton is also handy for the North Pennines and Lake District.
The market towns of Penrith, Kendal, Appleby-in-Westmorland and Kirkby Stephen are all within easy reach, as are the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway line, Lowther Castle Gardens and several National Trust and English Heritage properties.
The surrounding lanes are ideal for cycling and there are plenty of footpaths and open fells for you to explore – the new WtoW cross-country cycle route passes through Orton and the Coast to Coast long distance footpath passes the village up on the Scar.
