All five Watermill Cottages are tastefully converted from the former Mill building, barns, stables and labourers’ cottages around the old mill-house, built in the 1750s, by the Gara Brook. They're a maximum 150 metres' distance of each other, and so ideal for combining for larger parties of family and friends. All together we can accommodate up to 23 people.
Each cottage is individual in decor yet each offers spacious, comfortable accommodation, a modern fitted kitchen (with washing machine, microwave, electric oven or range, kettle, toaster, fridge-freezer), bathrooms with baths and showers, and two to three bedrooms. Cots and highchairs are available for free - just ask when you book.
Freshly-ironed bed-linen is included; please bring your own towels and tea cloths. Each cottage is thoroughly cleaned before you arrive and we supply basic Ecover cleaning products and microfibre cloths to minimise our environmental impact.
Each cottage has a wood-burning stove plus heating from electric storage and wall heaters so you're warm and cosy whatever the season. There are plenty of logs too, included in the cottage rental. And the beds have a patchwork quilt or fleecy throws.
It's tranquil here - we don't receive TV or mobile phone signals so there's no mobile ring tones or TV, just a real-life 24-hour nature channel right outside your cottage window. And a soundtrack of birdsong and the splashing river so you really do have peace and quiet!
There are radios, nature guides, plenty of books, and a good supply of games.
Dog Friendly Holidays
A dog is part of your family - and ours, see right - and they're just as welcome at Watermill Cottages as you are. We're at the end of a quiet hedged road with a green lane beyond us so no through traffic, and lovely walks from your cottage door round the valley and beyond. Three cottages have large fenced gardens, one has a walled riverside patio leading onto the woods, and one has an open patio a few steps from the shared lawn and stream.
Slapton Sands is close by and is dog-friendly all year round, and there are many other dog-friendly beaches nearby. The Strete Gate end is wider and has one of our favourite walks. The Torcross end has a village shop and pub and food. There's parking at both ends and in the middle.
Slapton has two dog-friendly pubs, The Tower Inn and The Queens Arms, both with gardens. The Queens Arms does takeaways too. The Tradesmans Arms at Stokenham. The Green Dragon at Stoke Fleming, The Cricket Inn at Beesands by the beach (oh the crab soup!) are some of the many dog-friendly pubs in nearby villages.
Dogs love playing on the shared lawns, in the stream and exploring our 'Robin Hood Land' further down the valley as much as the kids do. There's over 13 acres of unspoilt wild nature in woods, meadows, and wetlands to enjoy. And if your dog isn't good off the lead we have stock-fenced fields they can run in. There's a hosepipe in the courtyard if the stream doesn't do the trick!
“A beautiful secluded valley with 5 lovely cottages to rent. We spent a week here and loved it. There is no tv, phone signal or internet. A real get away down a long rural lane! Dogs are more than welcome, as long as they don't chase the ducks! There is a stream running through the grounds, which children and dog both loved, and plenty of rest, peace and quiet. We found plenty to do with the dog in tow, from dog friendly beaches, to walks and places to eat where the dog could come in, but to be honest, I could have spent the whole week in the valley! The owners are lovely and very helpful and the cottages are clean and comfortable as well as very well equipped.”
