London Bowen Technique – Holistic Therapy for Dogs and their Owners

I am a professionally qualified and fully registered Human & Canine Bowen therapist, and I offer my services in London and the South East.

The Canine Bowen Technique (CBT) is a ‘light-touch’ therapy offering dogs a gentle, non-invasive and effective hands-on technique that may promote healing, pain-relief and body/energy re-balancing.

It is based on the principles of a successful human modality – the Bowen Technique – which was developed by Tom Bowen, in Australia in the 1950s, and brought to the UK in the early 1990s.

Why Use CBT
Because Bowen treats the body as a whole it can bring improvement to many aspects of a dog’s health and it can be beneficial for

Improving recovery times when used before and after operative surgery
Effective maintenance and prevention for active working dogs
Improving the quality of life for dogs with chronic conditions or diseases
Rescue/re-homed dogs – relaxation of tension caused by earlier stress and trauma

Common conditions which are often presented at Canine Bowen Technique sessions include:
Back problems, Arthritis and acute injury – sprains and strains
Pre and Post surgery – reducing recovery times
Hips and elbow dysplasia, Lameness and other gait problems, Stress and anxiety disorder
Sciatica, Allergies and skin conditions

Canine Bowen Technique therapists do not diagnose, prescribe medication or alter any medication already prescribed for the dog.

When used on dogs, Canine Bowen Technique is regarded as a manipulative therapy covered by the Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order 1962 of the 1966 Veterinary Surgeons Act, allowing qualified practitioners to work on the animal, on referral from the dog’s veterinarian.

How CBT Works
Therapists use fingers and thumbs on precise points on the dog’s body and apply a gentle rolling movement over muscle and soft tissue.

Breaks between the moves allow the dog’s body to assimilate the work and start the process of rebalancing/realignment. There are no hard or forceful moves, no cracking, crunching or manipulations. It is simple, gentle and pain-free.

A key feature of Canine Bowen Technique is that the treatment is never forced on the dog.

CBT is holistic and treats the body as a whole. So for example on a dog with rear a leg pain I will also work on other part of its body (like neck, shoulders, front legs) to address any problems caused by the dog compensating shifting its weight forward to relieve the pain on his rear legs.
