St. Edwards Dog Training Club – Dog Training Club in Orpington, Kent
Welcome to St. Edwards Dog Training Club (Kennel Club Registered/Listed). Established in the 1960s, our club promotes good advice and successful training techniques for dog owners in the locality of Orpington, Kent, near Bromley. We have been providing dog training classes in Orpington for over 50 years, welcoming dogs of varying breeds and ages alongside their dedicated owners.

We offer Puppy Training courses throughout the year, with follow-on classes for more advanced pet training. For those who wish to take their training further, we also run a Competitive Obedience section, enabling members to work toward competing at obedience shows during the year. New members are welcome in both pet obedience (including puppy courses) and competitive obedience.
Classes are held at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Worlds End Lane, Green Street Green, Orpington, BR6 6AG. Our training takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at this convenient local venue, providing a consistent and supportive environment for continued learning and progression.

All instructors at St. Edwards are very experienced and closely involved with dog training at all levels. They train and compete regularly with their own dogs at obedience shows, bringing practical expertise and proven methods to every class. Our aim is to help you build reliable skills, confidence and understanding so you and your dog can enjoy training together.
The Improvers Class is held every Wednesday from 7.45pm to 8.45pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall. This class is open to any young adolescent dog, including graduates of our Puppy Course, as well as rehomed or rescue young dogs that have begun basic obedience such as Sit, Lie Down and Come When Called. The goal is to progress core exercises to a higher level while introducing enjoyable new obedience elements.
In the Improvers Class, you and your dog will develop additional skills such as “Go To Mat” and “Instant Down,” along with body awareness and trick-style exercises to keep motivation high. Young dogs particularly enjoy learning Spin, Weave, Step Up and Tunnel, with varied activities to maintain engagement and enthusiasm throughout the session.

Our instructors for the Improvers Class include Jenny Harknett, KCAI (Cd.Ob) NPTC, a Kennel Club Accredited Instructor in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour who teaches the Wednesday evening Improvers Class and has extensive experience in both pet and competitive obedience. Jenny has competed successfully in Competitive Obedience for over thirty years, including qualifying for Crufts in 2013 with her collie, Flint, as part of the Southern Team in the Inter-Regional Obedience Event.
Alison Shaw teaches on Tuesday evenings for Competitive Obedience and on Wednesday evenings for the Puppy Course. Alison has many years of instructing experience and competes successfully with her border collie, Kali, in the higher categories at obedience shows. Our Chairman, Judy Weight, is a regular instructor who co-instructs the Puppy Course and the Improvers Class and assists with competitive obedience. Judy has many years of teaching experience and a rescue collie currently in training; her previous collies, Jaz and Bailey, competed at the top level of obedience.

St. Edwards Dog Training Club also holds an open obedience show each year. Planning is underway for our 2026 obedience show following the success of our 2025 event, which was held in May in conjunction with Warlingham DTC. Next year’s show will take place in May, with entries to be made online before the closing date (entries are not accepted on the day).
