Volharding - Dog Friendly, Historic Floating Holidays in Shotley, Suffolk
‘Volharding’ translates from Dutch as ‘Perseverance’ and is an historic 78ft barge, dating back to 1890. Featuring a large teak table on the main deck for al fresco dining, she sleeps 8-10 in a range of double and single cabins. She is moored to a jetty adjacent to the Old Brickyard and offers amazing views of the River Stour in Suffolk.
She is an extraordinary vessel and provides a base for magical waterborne holidays on the River Stour. She is fully seaworthy and lies to a jetty in a large garden alongside the owner’s two other waterside retreats. She sleeps from 2 to 12 guests. There are two double beds, one in the lovely skippers stern cabin, the rest are traditional sea going bunks.
The cockpit has amazing views up the Stour to the west toward Mistley and to the East, Harwich and Felixstowe. As the tide ebbs and flows covering and uncovering the RSPB mudflats, the scenery changes, the light is always different. The huge dawns and sunsets are a major part of the memories you will take home with you. There are still Thames Barges sailing these rivers with their majestic red sails, and if you like we can organise a day away on board one.
Have your lunch outside in the cockpit amongst the birds, or sit below in the comfortable saloon listening to the saltwater lapping against the hull.
“Volharding” is an ‘Oostzeetjalk’ class Dutch sailing barge, brought to the UK from Holland in 2000. She has been used for residential and cruising on the Thames and sailed in the Thames estuary in 2001. She has been well maintained and has beautiful proportions and size.
The Potting Shed: Sleeps 2, plus 1 or 2 kids. It nestles in the garden with its own greenhouse and a new conservatory, which is an amazing sun trap! This light and airy conversion offers the perfect romantic break, with your own enclosed terrace overlooking the River Stour.
Each room of this contemporary conversion has two large roof lights, which makes it really light and sunny. One end is the double bedroom, with cupboards built in and a large antique chest of drawers. With the pitched roof in evidence, there is a platform bed, accessed by a ladder, above the bedroom door; a magic place for children.
The Cottage: Sleeps 4+2 in two double bedrooms, plus a sofa bed in the conservatory, with stunning views of the the RSPB reserve and River Stour across your lawn. Your own sauna is a definite bonus! The ideal place for a small family or group of friends to relax, unwind and get back to nature.
There are two large double bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms, one with a bath the other with a shower. Two sitting rooms, again both with wood burning stoves, providing a comfortable indoor space. The kitchen is open plan and there is a dining area as you can see above. Or you can eat at the table in the conservatory and enjoy the remarkable views.
