5 Great Smaller Dog Breeds to Add to Your Family

There are many different dog breeds and they’re all unique from one another. When you decide that you want a dog, it can be extremely difficult to decide which breed is the right fit for you. One factor that really sets dog breeds apart is their size. Some are massive, while others are incredibly tiny.

If you live in an apartment or simply don’t want to deal with a huge dog, getting a smaller dog can be a good idea. However, even though “smaller” does narrow your options down quite a bit, there are still plenty of breeds to consider.

In addition, it can be difficult to find a small dog breed that is the right fit for you. To help with that, here are 5 great choices to consider!

Pug
Pugs are affectionate little fellows that do extremely well with children. They’re quite tiny as well, topping out at a size of about 10 to 13 inches and a weight of 14 to 18 pounds.

Pugs are extremely popular dogs due to their adorable appearance. Their large heads with big sparkling eyes adorned with wrinkles give them an appearance that’s hard to resist for many people.

However, one thing that must be considered with pugs it that their compressed faces make it more difficult for them to breathe, which is why some people consider it unethical to breed these dogs.

Pugs do not need a whole lot of exercise and thrive as couch potatoes. They’re also very friendly towards strangers, other animals, and are highly playful. These dogs really do not have a bad bone in their body and want to be everybody’s friend.

Mini Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a massive dog, but did you know that there’s a smaller version of it? It’s created by mixing the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and is called the Mini Bernese Mountain Dog.

At 20 inches in height, the Mini Bernese is not as small as some of the other breeds on this list, but if you want a medium to small-sized dog with a big heart, this breed can be an excellent choice. This mixed dog has a high drive to please its owner and is well known for its sweet temperament. They enjoy spending plenty of time with their family and want to be around you as much as possible. As a result, these dogs do not do very well if they’re left alone for extended periods of time.

Mini Bernese Mountain dogs are also very intelligent and highly trainable. They’re quick learners and their drive to please makes it very easy to teach them a variety of commands and tricks.

These dogs love the outdoors, so they’re best suited for families that can keep up with their high energy levels.

Corgi
Corgis are very well known for their short stature, affectionate nature, and cheeky smile. These little guys are very vigilant despite their small size.

They’re among the most popular dog breeds in the world, and for good reason. They might be stubborn from time to time, but they’re truly lovely dogs that love nothing more than spending time with their favorite humans as much as possible.

Corgis typically get to a size of about 10 to 12 inches and weigh around 30 pounds.

Pomeranian
Pomeranians are adorable little furballs. They’re often described as “toy” dogs due to their small size. They’re typically 6 to 7 inches in height and weigh between 3 and 7 pounds.

What they lack in size though, they more than make up for in personality. Pomeranians are very affectionate dogs with a feisty personality. They don’t seem to realize how small they are and do not back down from dogs or people that are much larger than they are.
While these dogs are affectionate with their family, they’re not always that good with kids and families with kids might want to choose a different breed instead.

Chihuahua
No list of small dog breeds would be complete without the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed on earth at a size of around 5 to 8 inches and a weight of less than 6 pounds.

These small dogs are highly playful and love interacting with their humans as much as they can. However, they’re also quite noisy and often bark quite a lot. This can be limited with proper training, but the fact remains that they’re a vocal breed.

While these tiny dogs can definitely be quite affectionate, they’re not the best for families with small kids due to the fact that they are so small. A rowdy, playful kid can very easily accidentally hurt this small dog. In response, the dog might snap and attack the kid as well. As a result, it’s better to get a different breed if you have very young children.
