Dog Food equals Dog Poo

Dog food and dog poo go hand in hand – this is fact!
Food is a constant consideration for all dog owners and of course, puppy food is a whole different consideration. Puppies grow 20 times faster than adult dogs and therefore require a special diet to aid their physical development.

When considering puppy food, specially formulated growth food is recommended which needs to be provided at evenly spaced intervals to avoid over stretching their small stomachs. The usual procedure is to feed your puppy four meals per day up until the age of four months. Reduce the feed to three meals per day until it is six months old when you can reduce to two meals per day for the rest of its life.

What goes in, must come out!
The stage of your dog’s life and what they eat will of course determine what comes out. It’s important to keep the garden clear and clean from all dog waste, to reduce the chance of spreading the bacteria and parasites into the home. Many puppies are born with worms, and therefore their waste must be cleared with extra care. We advise The dooup because it clears while spraying the affected area and the scoop inside. The dooup can store up to 10 days’ worth of puppy waste, so it will save bags and time, as well as leaving the garden hygienically clean for all to use.

If children are using the garden too, you will need to be careful that they don’t come into contact with the waste as there is a chance they will be affected with toxicariasis which is what happened to toddler Aimee Langdon below. As a result, she lost the sight in one eye.

Dog Food…too many options?
We are spoilt for choice when it comes to dog food, so it is often difficult to know which one to buy. There is a huge range of dry complete foods on the market and the quality varies. Try to choose a food specially designed for them and suits your budget. The ‘premium’ dry foods tend to have the best quality ingredients. Many are based on chicken and rice or corn.

With semi-moist and tinned foods, choose a good quality food with an easily digestible recipe. For example, chicken and rice. Ensure it is nutritionally complete and doesn’t require additional foods.

To make home-made dog food, it can be very difficult to get a balance right. It’s a good idea to choose from a tried and tested commercial diet that fits in with your daily schedule.

Dog treats are also in abundance, and range in quality. Some of the commercial treats have far too much sugar, colourings and milk products in them. Even doggy chocs or low fat yogurt drops often contain sugars or lactose (milk sugar). Always check the ingredients.

Remember, if you are regularly feeding your dog treats, reduce the amount in their meals so as to avoid over feeding.

So…about that dog poo
Puppy poo is often soft or runny, but with time and good diet this will improve. The dooup Complete Pet Waste Clearer works well in the garden to clear and sanitise the area after your puppy has been. It works best on grass to remove soft or runny waste. Push the lever several times and re-position to achieve maximum clearance and sanitation.

If soft or runny stools continue from your adult dog, it may be that his or her digestive system is slightly strained due to intense exercise, different food, noise or other factors. It is sometimes a good idea to stop the food for 12 to 24 hours. Resume, then feed half the usual amount the next day to ease their system..

Feeding your dog pure pumpkin (not pie) can work as a healthy treat as it contains dietary fibre to sooth the system, absorb moisture and firm the stool. Add around 1 to 2 teaspoons for a small dog and 1 to 2 tablespoons for a large dog to the main meal.

Consider changing the dog food. Show an ingredient label from your current kibble or canned food to your vet and he/she may suggest another type of food without corn or grains. Corn and grains can add bulk and this can lead to softening the stools. Keeping things simple, such as fish and sweet potato are really beneficial for chronic stool problems.

We hope this helps. We know only know a little about dog food but we know lots about dog poo and how best to clear and sanitise your garden with ease and hygiene. The dooup Complete Pet Waste Clearer is contact-less, easy and offers a hygienic way to keep your garden clear and clean. It also saves you bags and time. Take a look at it in action here
